The “Text Door Neighbor” Game Is Back as “Number Neighbor”

Since the dawn of phones, man has wondered about the mysterious other just out of reach, a mirrored self who by fate is separated from the self by but one digit. Thus, when text messaging became the predominant means of communication, man stepped forth into the unknown by hitting up this mysterious person: the Text Door Neighbor.

The Text Door Neighbor game is simple: you simply text the person who’s number is one digit off from yours and see how they react. For example, if your number is (555)-555-5555, you text (555)-555-5556 and see how the person responds. The game has gone in and out of style over the past decade and recently saw a resurgence at the beginning of August when a Twitter user discovered their text door neighbor was, let’s say, not very keen. Thus started a new wave of “neighbor number” tweets on the timeline. Here are some of the best.
