With the battery capacity of smartphones on the rise, Android OEMs have been trying to reduce charging time. While efforts have been mostly restricted to increasing the power output of the charging adapters, Samsung is trying something entirely new to get rid of this problem. Samsung is reportedly looking at materials beyond lithium ion for increasing battery efficiency. According to a tweet by well-known tipster Evan Blass, Samsung will launch a smartphone powered by graphene battery by 2021.

“Samsung is hoping to have at least one handset either next year or in 2021, I’m told, which will feature a graphene battery instead,” Blass tweeted. So, what’s the USP of using graphene instead of li-ion? Samsung claimed that the battery charging time would be reduced drastically and might get fully charged within 30 minutes.

“Capable of a full charge in under a half-hour, they still need to raise capacities while lowering costs,” he added.

Samsung, however, haven’t confirmed any such developments yet.

While lithium-ion batteries powered mobile phones and other electronics for quite some time now, it has proven to quite hazardous as well. These batteries have caused smartphones to exploded and even cause death. Samsung in fact suffered the most when it had to discontinue the entire Galaxy Note 7 series smartphones due to faulty lithium-ion batteries which caused panic among users and even forced airlines to bar passengers travelling with the Galaxy Note 7.

It would be interesting to see whether graphene batteries would be safer than lithium-ion batteries or not.

Meanwhile, Samsung has added the largest battery in a Galaxy Note device this time in the Galaxy Note 10 which comes with a 4,300mAh battery. Samsung, also for the first time, as added 45W fast charging support along with wireless charging and reverse wireless charging for charging wearables and other phones.
